Sunday, August 1, 2010

On August 1, Dr. Malcolm Butler began his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Science. Dr. Butler comes to Carleton from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax where he had been the Dean of the Faculty of Science since July 2006. His previous positions at Saint Mary’s include Chair of the Department of Astronomy and Physics and Professor of Physics.  Prior to his move to Saint Mary’s in 1993, Dr Butler was an Assistant Professor and research scientist in the Department of Physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

On accepting his new position, Dr. Butler said what impressed him about Carleton was the “research breadth and strength of the faculty members at the university and the strong and enthusiastic commitment to student success that is evident at Carleton and in the Faculty of Science.”

In addition to his academic appointments, Dr. Butler has served on several boards and councils, including the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP), the Board of Management for the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA), the Atlantic Provinces Council on the Sciences (APICS), TRIUMF National Laboratory Board of Management, several Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Project Review Panels and the Division of Nuclear Physics at the Canadian Association of Physicists.

Most recently, Dr. Butler was appointed by NSERC to chair the long-range planning process for subatomic physics in Canada.

Dr. Butler received his PhD in theoretical nuclear physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and his BSc Honours in theoretical physics and applied math from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Now that he has been on campus for several weeks, Dr Butler  noted “how friendly and genuinely supportive the Carleton community has been since I have arrived.”
