Science Learning Communities launching their second year this fall!

Thursday, June 26, 2014

Now beginning their second year, Science Learning Communities (SLCs) give incoming first-year students the opportunity to start university with a built-in support system. Students in the Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Combined Honours Neuroscience and Computer Science programs are eligible to join this new program.

As a member of a Science Learning Community, students will be part of a small group who will take the same lectures, labs and tutorials together. This will allow incoming first-year students to meet other students in their program and easily form lab partnerships and study groups. The SLCs aim to create a community feel that fosters a deeper understanding of students’ program of study.

Students enrolled in a Science Learning Community will also get to take part in bi-weekly workshops. These workshops will connect them to important resources on campus and will help further develop personal, academic and professional skills. Workshops will include guest speakers, social activities and community development components.

The SLC program enriches a student’s first year experience by adding the benefits of easier registration, a strong peer group, and a facilitated transition from high school with dedicated SLC mentors and engaging workshops.
