Carleton University’s Chemistry Department is hosting its fourth annual outdoor chemistry magic show. Light Up the Night with Chemistry in the Dark is part of Science Rendezvous, a national one-day celebration of science.
This free one-hour show features family fun, including children aged six and up, with a look at the inner workings of fireworks, spontaneous combustions and things that glow in the dark.
There will be hands-on activities before the show. Participants can make ice cream with liquid nitrogen, encounter lots of interesting smells (including molecules that are left- or right-handed), make slime, see some of the demonstrations up close and much more. There will also be posters about the chemistry of wine and chocolate, as well as a tribute to the centenary of the First World War, with a look at how it was impacted by advances in chemistry that reverberated through the last century.
When: Saturday, May 9, 2015. Hands-on activities take place at 7:30 p.m. and the Chemistry Magic Show begins at dusk, or approximately 8:45 p.m.
Where: The Chemistry Magic Show takes place in the Amphitheatre between Southam Hall and Paterson Hall at Carleton University. In case of inclement weather, the show will take place in Theatre B, Southam Hall.
Hands-on activities will take place adjacent to the Amphitheatre.
This event is free and open to the public. Food bank donations are requested in lieu of admission fees. Please note that seating is limited to 500 seats on a first-come, first-served basis.
Parking: All university lots have a flat fee of $3. Lot P1 is located nearby.
