We are hosting an Floor Hockey Provincial Championships May 8th/9th at Carleton University for Special Olympics athletes with over 700 athletes in attendance.
Over the past 40 years Special Olympics has grown from a modest program serving local athletes to become the world’s largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion, and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sports. You can find more information about Special Olympics Ontario here: http://www.specialolympicsontario.com
We have a Healthy Athletes program that braches off of our regular programming. We partner with colleges and universities to run our Health Screenings across the Province.
Through a team of health-care volunteers, the purpose of the Healthy Athletes Program is to:
- Improve access and health care for Special Olympics athletes;
- Make referrals to local health practitioners when appropriate;
- Train health care professionals and students about the needs and care of people with ID;
- Collect, analyze and disseminate data on the health status and needs of people with ID; and
- Advocate for improved health policies and programs for people with ID.
Under the supervision of Clinical Directors, students would be assisting in a number of roles such as helping to take BMI, Blood pressure and Bone Density screening as well as help educate our athletes on healthy eating, physical activity, sun safety etc. This would occur at the same time as the floor hockey tournament, athletes would have a chance to run through the screenings on their breaks from play.
We are looking for health promotion/Nursing students to volunteers for this on Friday May 8th 9-4 and 9th 9-2pm at Carleton University.
