Chemistry professor honoured with a university Research Achievement Award

For the millions of people worldwide who suffer from psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia, Carleton Professor Maria DeRosa’s next research initiative provides hope for a new treatment.

DeRosa is one of 10 Carleton professors honoured with a university Research Achievement Award for her innovative research.

DeRosa has won major awards for her research that looks at how single-stranded pieces of synthetic DNA called aptamers can be used to combat everything from diseases to environmental contaminants.

Physics professor receives Research Achievement Award for breakthroughs in medical physics

Last year, David Rogers, Canada Research Chair in Medical Physics, was only the fourth Canadian ever to receive the William D. Coolidge Award, the highest honour from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

This week, he is again being honoured for his outstanding research with one of 10 $15,000 Research Achievement Awards from Carleton. These awards honour faculty for innovative research.

The 2011 Expedition to Antarctica

Carleton Students and Professors head to Antarctica
for an ‘Anything But Textbook’ Experience.

Seven Carleton University students will be earning course credits at the end of February while conducting research on the Earth’s southernmost continent.

The students and their instructors, Claudia Schroder-Adams and Natalia Rybczynski, will travel to Antarctica Feb. 12 to 28as part of the Students on Ice program.

Carleton Biology Professor Leads Team to Investigate Mysteries Behind Killer Bird Disease

Avian cholera is the most critical infectious disease affecting wild North American waterfowl. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has just awarded Carleton University Professor Mark Forbes and a team of researchers more than half a million dollars over the next three years to study this bacterial disease in Arctic breeding waterfowl.

What are the best and worst jobs of 2011?

In US-based CareerCast.com's ranking of 200 jobs, which is based on income, work environment, stress, and career outlook, white-collar jobs dominate the best jobs list for this year, while the worst jobs of 2011 are nearly all blue-collar work. The 10 best jobs are dental hygienist, audiologist, historian, biologist, meteorologist, computer systems analyst, statistician, actuary, mathematician, and software engineer, with salaries in US dollars ranging from $63,144 to $94,178.

Environmental Science program receives national accreditation

Carleton’s Honours Bachelor of Science Environmental Science program has recently been accredited by the Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada.

Accreditation is a new national process under the auspices of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Commission, which oversees the certification of environmental professionals.   

One of only three programs at Canadian universities currently accredited, Carleton’s program has been specifically recognized for preparing its graduates to be successful and competent environmental scientists.
