Governor-General’s Medal recipient Kyle Kevin Biggar, a 26-year-old native of Summerside, P.E.I., is fascinated by the ability of some animals to survive extreme environmental conditions. He was introduced to research in this field during his undergraduate studies in biology and soon discovered Kenneth Storey’s laboratory at Carleton University.

Storey would become Biggar’s most influential and inspiring professor as Biggar completed his doctorate in the study of the molecular basis of animals who survive such environmental stresses as freezing, low oxygen and hibernation.

This year's Canadian Undergraduate Conference on Healthcare (CUCOH) will be taking place November 15-17 at Queens University. CUCOH is an interesting, informative healthcare conference solely for undergraduate students in any field, as it covers a wide range of topics. It is a fantastic networking opportunity where students get to hear experts talk about current research in their field, as well as participate in hands-on workshops.

Please be advised that there will be increased traffic congestion coming onto campus at the Bronson entrance due to the parking garage construction. This increased congestion is expected to take place the week of Nov. 4.

There will be flag persons on site directing traffic and assisting with traffic flow in that area.

Groundbreaking research on disruptive colouration and animal camouflage, published in Biology Letters on Oct. 23, 2013, was led by Richard Webster of Carleton University. Webster, who was a PhD student at the time of the research has since successfully defended his dissertation earlier in October.
