The Faculty Graduate Mentoring Awards, announced at a reception held on November 30, were established to recognize up to ten faculty mentors annually who have made outstanding contributions to the supervision and research mentorship of graduate students. The winners have been chosen for their demonstrated ability to render exceptional mentoring services and for supporting and fostering transformational effects on the careers of their graduate students.

Technical experts at Carleton’s High Performance Virtual Computing Laboratory (HPCVL) site are helping medical researchers at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) speed up their analytical processes for a research project that could ultimately find drugs to target specific genes associated with certain diseases.

Professor Kenneth Storey, Canada Research Chair in Molecular Physiology, will be awarded the prestigious Flavelle Medal from the Royal Society of Canada on Saturday, November 27, 2010.

Established in 1924, the Flavelle Medal is biennially awarded for an outstanding contribution to biological science during the preceding 10 years or for significant additions to a previous outstanding contribution to biological science.

The 2010 A. D. Dunton Alumni Award of Distinction was awarded to Dr. Ivan Fellegi, Chief Statistician emeritus, Statistics Canada, and a graduate of Carleton’s School of Mathematics and Statistics.
This award, Carleton’s highest alumni honour, is given in recognition of outstanding achievement or contribution in any field of endeavour.

Donald Dawson, Professor Emeritus at the Carleton School of Mathematics and Statistics, was recently named a Fellow of the Royal Society.  Fellows are drawn from the UK and the Commonwealth and are elected for life through a peer review process on the basis of excellence in science.

A team of students working with Chemistry Professor Maria DeRosa have won the 2010 Dance Their PhD competition sponsored by Science Magazine. Led by doctoral student Maureen McKeague, the team beat out three other finalists to take the title.  They were presented with a $1,000 cheque October 18 in New York City at the Imagine Science Film Festival.

An interdisciplinary field-based science course in the “Origin and evolution of Antarctic ecosystems over time” will take place in Antarctica from February 12 to 28, 2011. Open to Carleton University science students in Earth Sciences, Biology, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Integrated Science or other interested students, this field course is offered in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature and Students on Ice. This course will be taught during the expedition of the M/V Ushuaia from southern Argentina to the Antarctic Peninsula.
