Dean's summer research internships (DSRIs)
Every year, the Dean of Science offers a few of our top first-year science, computer science and mathematics students paid summer research internships. These Dean’s Summer Research Internships (DSRIs) afford students the opportunity to work with professors to conduct research. Currently, students who receive these competitive research internships will be paid $4620 ($11/hour for 12 weeks @ 35 hours/week) to work with a professor in the Faculty of Science.
Application process
Letters are sent to eligible students (based on GPA) at the end of January each year inviting them to apply. The DSRI application requires that students state why they want to do research and the name of the professor they wish to work with and why.
Students can visit faculty members’ websites to see what kind of research is being conducted. Students can also contact faculty members directly to discuss their research projects in more detail. Applications are generally due mid-February.
Winning an award
All applicants will be notified of the results by early March. There will be at least fifteen awards given out. Winners will be selected from the pool of applicants based on their application form and their grades in the previous year/term. The application plays a large role in whether or not an award is given, so great thought and care should be taken when filling out the application form. Application forms are graded based on enthusiasm, professionalism and clarity of ideas. Once the winners are announced, they will be asked to contact their preferred professor to determine if there is still space available in their laboratory for the summer. Winners will be instructed accordingly at that time. If you are awarded a DSRI, you will have to maintain full-time enrollment and a CGPA of 10.0 or better throughout your first year.
