Scientific paper by Biology professor Jayne Yack entitled "If a bird flies in the forest, does an insect hear it?’ garners media attention

The paper, recently published in Biology Letters, describes the research conducted by Professor Yack and her team of researchers who looked at the role hearing plays in insects to detect foraging birds. The publication The Hindu discusses their research. Read the full article here.

Former professor of Mathematics Moray St. John "Jack" Macphail passes away

Professor Macphail passed away on Monday, August 12 in his 102nd year. Professor Macphail had a long and distinguished 30-year career in Mathematics, and holds the honour of being the first Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies here at Carleton. A memorial service will be held on September 28 in Ottawa. View the obituary at the Ottawa Citizen here.

Biology professor and former PhD student publish paper in the Royal Society's Biology Letters

Carleton Biology professor Sue Bertram and Lauren Fitzsimmons (former PhD student of Professor Bertram’s and currently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Windsor) have co-authored a paper which was published July 10 in the Royal Society’s Biology Letters.

The Faculty of Science was saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Ildi Munro

Professor Ildi Munro who taught at Carleton for almost 40 years in the Department of Earth Sciences and the Institutes of Environmental Science and Integrated Science lost her battle with cancer on July 4. Professor Munro officially retired in June 2012 but was until the last few months still active on campus teaching and mentoring students as she had done for so many years. Her dedication to the students and the programs she helped develop knew no bounds. She will truly be missed by those whose lives she touched and our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and colleagues on campus.

The Philadelphia Inquirer taps into research conducted by Biology PhD student Zoe Panchen for an article on climate change

In a recent article on how spring seems to be coming earlier each year, the Philadelphia Inquirer looked to research conducted by Zoe Panchen, currently a Carleton PhD student in Biology. As a Master's student at the University of Delaware, Panchen examined the impact of climate change on flowering times of plants in the Philadelphia area. Her research was published in the American Journal of Botany in 2012.

The process can be lengthy and sometimes unclear so it is important to take this opportunity to complete your CCV where any questions you may have can be answered immediately.

Global News and Toronto Star cover fish tracking research project in Toronto Harbour which is being led by Professor Steven Cooke

The research project which involves not only Carleton but the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Aquatic Habitat Toronto, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, is tracking the movement of fish species in the Toronto Harbour. Scientists want to know what species are there and what they are doing: how they move about, where they spawn, where their favorite spots are.  An acoustic tag is implanted in the fish and over 50 receivers are placed around the Harbour to track and record the movement of these fish. Around 100 fish have been tagged so far.

Congratulations to Science faculty members who were recognized with a 2012-13 Achievement Award

Professor Kim Hellemans (Neuroscience) was awarded a Teaching Achievement Award.

Vida Dujmovic (Math & Stats), Heather Logan (Physics), and Daniel Panario (Math & Stats) were awarded a Research Achievement Award.

All awards will be handed out at a gala celebration on May 7 at 3 pm in Baker’s.

Approximately 1,000 students are participating in a Mini-Enrichment program running on campus from May 5 to 10

Carleton offers about 50 mini-courses to students in Grades 8 to 11 to give them the opportunity to explore a field of study or area of interest in a university or college setting. This year, the Faculty of Science offerings include such courses as: What is Evolution?, Web Ninja, School of Rock!, Adventures in Mathematics, The Brain and more.

Laureen Harper welcomes local students competing in Let’s Talk Science’s All Science Challenge at Carleton on April 30

Carleton University  welcomed Laureen Harper and approximately 130 Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from 11 local schools for the 2013 Let’s Talk Science’s All Science Challenge. This event was one of 23 All Science Challenge competitions happening across the country in April and May.
