Mathematics Professor Kevin Cheung started making YouTube videos this past summer for a couple of his fall third- and fifth-year classes. "I wanted to adopt the flipped classroom approach: one that requires students to watch and read the materials ahead of time and then we would discuss problems (easy and hard) in class. Students would see anonymous submissions during the class and we would critique the solutions."

Carleton University’s Jeffrey Smith, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, is part of a team that’s been awarded a three-year Collaborative Health Research Project (CHRP) grant of almost $800,000. CHRP is a joint initiative between Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) and NaturalSciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to fund health-based innovative science.

If you have looked at the Herzberg Laboratories building from certain vantage points on campus, you may have noticed the Observatory situated on the flat roof. In the early 1980s, the Kessler Observatory, named after long time faculty member Dr. Dan Kessler who was instrumental in the observatory’s establishment, was officially opened.

Undergraduate students from the physics department will be building a model of the ATLAS detector out of Lego pieces! Just over 9,500 Lego pieces will be used and the model is about 1/50 the size of the real detector. Instructions to build the model are available online. Drop by during the day and watch the students' progress on Friday, September 21 starting at 9 am in Herzberg 3125.
